NASA Space Apps Challenge Bangladesh

Embark on an extraordinary journey with the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, where innovation meets collaboration, and boundaries are surpassed. As an international hackathon, Space Apps unites the brightest minds from around the globe – coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and innovators – to address real-world problems on Earth and beyond, utilizing the free and open data provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its esteemed Space Agency Partners.

NASA's International Space Apps Challenge has captivated the imagination of over 220,000 visionary registrants from over 185 countries and territories, since its inception in 2012. Together, they have wielded the awe-inspiring might of NASA's open data, crafting groundbreaking solutions to the formidable challenges we face in the boundless expanse of space and right here on our blue planet.

BASIS, as the long-standing custodian of this event, has upheld its commitment for nine consecutive years in Bangladesh. Collaborating with NASA and the in-house BASIS Students' Forum (BSF), BASIS has created a platform for participants from nine regions across Bangladesh to engage in this prestigious international challenge. Whether hailing from Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barisal, Khulna, Cumilla, or Mymensingh, regional participants have the opportunity to soar to great heights. The realm of possibilities knows no bounds as projects of diverse nature, spanning hardware, software, mobile apps, games, and prototypes, all converge to showcase the limitless potential of innovation.

Over the years, Bangladeshi teams have soared to astounding heights, achieving remarkable milestones. In 2018, they secured the 3rd and 5th place, and in 2019, they soared to the pinnacle, claiming the championship with an additional finalist team. Team Olik from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) emerged as champions in "Best Use of Data" category, mesmerizing the world with their lunar virtual reality (VR) application, which transported users to the historic Apollo 11 landing site in a breathtaking virtual-reality experience, crafted within a 48-hour sprint.

The flame of brilliance burned brighter in 2020, as BUET Zenith from Bangladesh ascended to victory in the sub-category "Orbital Sky" under the category "Connect." In 2021, Bangladesh once again claimed the title of world champion at the NASA Space Apps Challenge, with "Team Mohakash" from Khulna securing the top position in the "Best Mission Concept" Category, triumphing over 4,534 teams from 162 countries. "Team Mohakash" emerged as the champions of the Khulna Regional Division in the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2021 National Hack-a-Thon. With each triumph, Bangladeshi teams have become beacons of inspiration, showcasing their unwavering spirit, their unparalleled mission concepts, their unparalleled utilization of data, and contributing immensely to the global space innovation.
